The Problem
The teachers in the School were spending around 20% of the time grading assignments. The School was looking for an AI solution to reduce the workload of the teachers, so they can concentrate their time on more creative work.
The Solution
An AI based assignment grading system was developed that could analyze the assignments taking into account grammar, spelling and relevance based on the key provided by the teacher. The teachers were provided with a high level overview of the concepts that the students understood well and those that they did not. The students were provided with information on their strong areas and areas where they need improvement.
The AI system was trained using existing answer papers that had various scores (very low to very high) for a couple of months until its grading accuracy improved to more than 90%.
The Impact
The school was able to save the time spent by teachers in grading assignments by around 75%. The teachers still manually grade the papers as a confirmatory step, but the average time taken for grading an assignment has been reduced from 8 minutes to around 2 minutes.
